Born in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Paata received his vocal education in his hometown before finishing his studies at Teatro alla Scala, Milan under Guilietta Simionato and Edoardo Mueller.
Having performed at all the world’s major opera houses since his incredible Covent Garden debut as Ramfis Aida in 1984 alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Katia Ricciarelli, cond. Zubin Mehta, Paata has received many awards and accolades. He holds the titles of: United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Commendatore in Italy, and the 1st Class Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art.
Recent engagements include Basilio Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Zaccaria Nabucco at the Metropolitan Opera, Konchak Prince Igor at Hamburg State Opera, Grand Inquisitor Don Carlo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Sparafucile Rigoletto and Boris Godunov at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Fiesco Simon Boccanegra and gala concerts with Placido Domingo at the Royal Opera House and at the Kremlin Palace, Banco Macbeth at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Commendatore Don Giovanni and Ivan Khovansky Khovanshchina for Paris Opera.
