Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená takes to the stage this week in her role debut as Pénélope for the first night of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse at the Theatre des Champs Elysees. Thought of as one of the first modern operas, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria is one of three full-length works that Monteverdi wrote towards the end of his life. Based around the story of Homer’s Odyssey the story unfolds around Ulisse’s return home from the Trojan wars to his kingdom which is full of villainous suitors courting his wife, Queen Penelope.
The production, directed by Mariame Clément and conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm draws on the balance between music and theatre, drama and comedy and is brought to life by the award-winning period ensemble, Le Concert d’Astrée.
