San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra – European tour with Sergey Khachatryan

This week the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO) embarks on its 10th international tour with a six-date tour of Europe. Widely considered to be one of the finest youth orchestras in the world, the SFSYO will play at some of Europe’s most prestigious venues including the Berlin Philharmonie and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The concert programmes range from contemporary pieces by Californian composers John Adams and Mason Bates, to Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Mahler’s Symphony no.5. The concerts in Milan, Udine, Ingolstadt, Berlin and Prague will feature Sergey Khachatryan who performs Bruch’s Violin Concerto, whilst Renaud Capucon will join the orchestra in Amsterdam.

Following the SFSYO’s ‘Bon Voyage’ concert at Davies Hall on May 17, Joshua Kosman (San Francisco Chronicle) wrote that the orchestra’s “formidable account of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony…conjured up nothing but awe and admiration”.
