About Andrea

American/Guatemalan/Austrian soprano Andrea Carroll’s 23/24 season includes returns to the
Wiener Staatsoper as Norina in Don Pasquale, to Houston grand Opera as Nannetta in Falstaff, and
to Teatro alla Scala as Norina in Don Pasquale. She will also make her Royal Opera House debut as
Musetta in La bohème. On the concert stage, she debuts with Orchestre National de Lille as
Musetta in La bohème, with the Ravinia Festival and Chicago Symphony Orchestra as Ilia in
Idomeneo under the baton of James Conlon, and returns to San Diego Opera for a concert with
tenor Joshua Guerrero.
Next season sees Andrea return to Teatro alla Scala as Woglinde in David’s Mcvicar’s new
production of Das Rheingold under the baton of Christian Thielemann, and debuts with the
Minnesota Orchestra in Mozart’s Requiem, with the PKF Prague Philharmonia as Norina in Don
Pasquale under the baton of Marco Armilliato, with Semperoper Dresden as Gretel in Hänsel und
Gretel, and San Francisco Opera as Musetta in La Bohème. Future plans include her debut with
Opéra national de Paris and returns to the Canadian Opera Company and The Metropolitan Opera.
In the 22/23 season Andrea made a series of house debuts, including Zerlina in Don Giovanni at The
Metropolitan Opera, Micaëla in Carmen with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Susanna in Le Nozze di
Figaro for Canadian Opera Company, as well as returning to Palm Beach Opera as Nannetta in
Falstaff.
Highlights of the 21/22 season included Andrea’s Teatro alla Scala debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni,
returns to the Wiener Staatsoper as Adina in L'elisir d'amore, to Houston Grand Opera as Pamina in
Die Zauberflöte, and to San Diego Opera as Beatriz in Daniel Catan’s La Hija de Rappaccini.
Work on the concert stage includes the world premiere of Johannes Maria Staud’s Jittering
Directions in her debut with the Wiener Symphoniker, Brahms’ Requiem for her debut with The
Cleveland Orchestra as well as Fauré’s Requiem & Columbine in Ethel Smyth’s Fête Galante in her
debut with the Bard Music Festival.
Between 2015-2020 Andrea was a member of the ensemble at the Wiener Staatsoper, performing
15 leading roles for the company. Her roles included Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Susanna in Le nozze di
Figaro, Nannetta in Falstaff, Gilda in Rigoletto, Musetta in La bohème, Norina in Don Pasquale, Adina
in L'elisir d'amore, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, Woglinde in Das
Rheingold/Götterdämmerung, and Stimme des Waldvogels in Siegfried, among others.
Notable operatic engagements have included Pamina in Die Zauberflöte with Dallas Opera, Adina in
L'elisir d'amore with Den Norske Opera, Julie Jordan in Carousel, Maria in West Side Story, and Leïla
in Les pêcheurs de perles with Houston Grand Opera, Musetta in La bohème with San Diego Opera,
both Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande and Adèle in Le Comte Ory with Garsington Opera, Micaëla
in Carmen with the Tokyo Philharmonic, Washington National Opera as Rosalba in Daniel Catan's
Florencia en el Amazonas, and Julie Jordan in Carousel at Glimmerglass Opera. Andrea has created
the roles of Mary Bailey in Jake Heggie's It's a Wonderful Life with Houston Grand Opera and both
Kitty in Johannes Maria Staud's Die Weiden and Fatima in Johanna Doderer's Fatima at the Wiener
Staatsoper.
Andrea studied at the Manhattan School of Music. As a member of Glimmerglass’ young artist
program, she sang Rose Segal in John Musto’s Later the Same Evening. She spent two summers
with Wolf Trap Opera where she sang Corinna in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims and Zerlina in Don
Giovanni. She spent two years as a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio where she
performed Adele in Die Fledermaus, Musetta in La Boheme, and Anne Egerman in A Little Night
Music, among others. Andrea was a finalist in the 2015 Operalia competition, winner of the 2012
Eleanor McCollum Competition and a 2018 recipient of the Richard Tucker Career Grant.
Andrea is a native of Bethesda, Maryland and is currently based in Vienna, Austria
