About Raúl

As a member of the International Opera Studio at the Opernhaus Zürich for the 23/24 season Raúl makes several role debuts including Albazar in Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia and Daniele in Verdi’s I Vespri Siciliani.

Raúl Gutiérrez is a Lyric tenor from Durango, Mexico. He began his formal singing studies at the age of 23 under the mentorship of renowned Mexican tenor Alfredo Portilla at the Faculty of Music of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City, following his studies in Architecture. Gutiérrez has since continued to develop his vocal technique through lessons and Masterclasses with esteemed opera singers and coaches such as César Ulloa, Emilio Pons, Jennifer Rowley, Brian Jadge, and many more. He has also worked with notable conductors including Marzio Conti, Stephan Veselka, and Rodrigo Macías.

In 2019, Raúl emerged as the winner of the “XXX Francisco Araiza Competition” at UNAM, granting him the opportunity to work with tenor Francisco Araiza at the European Music Institute of Vienna (EMIV) in Vienna, Austria. In 2021 he debuted as Don Basilio and Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro with the Symphonic Orchestra of Morelia at the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia, Mexico returning 2022, to debut as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi. Raúl’s recent achievements include his participation in the XXXVIII Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition, where he won several awards, including the Zarzuela Award, Bellas Artes Award, Francisco Araiza Award, and MOS (Mexico Opera Studio) Award. Additionally, in 2022 he received scholarships to attend the Sewanee Summer Music Festival as an Opera Fellow and the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria.

In April 2023, Raúl participated as a member in the academy Opera for Peace in Paris, where he performed at the Tour Eiffel and received guidance from renowned artists including Etienne Dupuis, Sumi Jo, Brian Jadge, Kamal Khan, Jeff Cohen, and Carmen Santoro. He concluded the 22/23 season by making his European debut in the title role of Massenet’s Werther at the Bregenzer Festspiele, accompanied by the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg under the baton of Claire Levacher.
