About Avi

The first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy, Avi Avital is the driving force behind the reinvigoration of the mandolin. For more than two decades he has reshaped the history and the future of his instrument, performing in the most prestigious halls worldwide. He has expanded the mandolin repertoire with transcriptions of various pieces and commissioning over 100 works including concertos by Jennifer Higdon, Anna Clyne, Avner Dorman and Giovanni Sollima.

The 2023/24 season sees performances with Frankfurt Radio Symphony (Krzysztof Urbański), Vancouver Symphony (Tianyi Lu), Camerata Salzburg (Anja Bihlmaier), Kammerakademie Potsdam and tours with Il Giardino Armonico (Giovanni Antonini), CHAARTS and Venice Baroque Orchestra. He tours North America with Hanzhi Wang (accordion) and plays recitals with Anneleen Lenaerts (harp), Omer Klein (jazz piano) and Brooklyn Rider. Avi is Artist-in-Residence at Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele and returns to DeSingel Antwerp, Wigmore Hall London, Philharmonie Berlin, Rheingau Musik Festival and Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Avi’s seventh album Concertos, with Il Giardino Armonico and Giovanni Antonini, features concertos by Vivaldi, Hummel, Bach, Barbella and Paisiello.
